2024 Clean Energy Milestones

As we look back at the 2024 year, we’re reflecting on a few of the top clean energy milestones that inspired our clean energy mission! From solar installations that broke records to increased global investments, the future of clean energy promises to be bright and it showed in 2024.

1. A record number of solar installations

Half way through 2024, the U.S. exceeded five million solar installations. An incredible 97%  of these installations were residential. Over 25% of those systems have become active since the Inflation Reduction Act — showing the reach and benefits of the legislation.

2. Double the job growth rate

In the two years since the Inflation Reduction Act took affect, over 330,000 new clean energy jobs were created. The total number of clean energy jobs has now reached over 3.4 million, more than at any other time in history.

3. Unprecedented grid funding

The Department of Energy allocated $473.6m in grid resilience through the IRA to enhance power grids and address extreme weather impacts on communities. Over the next five years, the program will allocate a total of $2.3 billion to states, territories, and tribes, taking into account population size, land area, the potential for disruptive events and prior investments in mitigation efforts.

4. Increased clean energy projects

More than 25 gigawatts of clean energy projects including solar, wind and geothermal were permitted, equaling enough clean energy to power more than 12 million homes across the country. These projects help communities across the country be part of the climate solution while creating more clean energy jobs.

5. Accelerated global investments

Global investments in clean energy are expected to reach two trillion this year. Even more impressive? That’s double the investments fossil fuels are expected to receive! This shift in investment strategy shows that many financial leaders believe in the long-term economic benefits of clean energy technologies.
